| FFR started in one form or another in 1988. That is when I came out of racing
"retirement" to indulge my then 5 year old daughter in her new found racing fantasy. As soon as we got back into the racing scene,
my mechanical background started bringing me work from the other racers. In 1991, Young America in Madison Wisconsin took on my
daughter as a sponsored rider. I came along with the package and ended up taking care of the owner's sons' race effort. It didn't
take long and the Young America Race Team consisted of 8 riders and around 14 bikes. During the next few years I struck up a friendship with world renowned tuner Eric Gorr. I credit Eric and his vast knowledge of 2 stroke tuning for giving me a big headstart on my tuning know how. In the meantime, Young America racing(YAR) became known nationwide for it's talented riders, which in turn made me look good as a tuner/builder. Several of those original team members have since gone off to stardom in the racing community. Blake Young, the first FFR rider, is now a factory Suzuki RoadRacer... Todd Kluever has moved on from bike racing to drive for the Rousch Nascar team. My daughter, Stevie Welch, went on to several Amateur Titles and became the third female to earn a coveted AMA National Number. YAR also made DT history with the very first DT "Transporter". It was a custom Peterbuilt motorhome that pulled a 53 foot 5th wheel trailer. After leaving YAR, I teamed up with Eric Gorr to help start up MaxPower Cylinders, a premier cylinder plating Company owned by the Poetin Co. in the UK. I convinced the higher ups to allow me to do complete engine rebuilds in conjunction with their plating facility. This way, we could offer a complete in-house engine rebuild. This practice is done at MP to this day. A year later, Eric and I both left MP to "do our own thing". Eric went back to doing Forward Motion and I officially started up FastForwardRacing. While the original intent of FFR was 2 stroke rebuilds and performance, my daughter had other ideas. When we would go racing, she usually ended up beating more than a few of the boys. Dads and the way they think, often didn't want to accept that their son just got their butt handed to them by a "gurl". So, figuring it must have been the bike rather than the rider, we found ourselves coming home several times with an empty trailer. Now, I have to build another bike by the following weekend's race, where the scenario would repeat with some regularity. So now we can add DTX bike building to the FFR list of services. And that wasn't all that was added to the FFR list of accomplishments. It was soon said that if you wanted a winning bike for your little up and comer, FFR was the place to call. The call list for bikes and info consisted of many of the top names in the sport. Tom Cummings of TCR, Rick Canode of Team Undo, Pat Moroney of Moroney's HD, Rich King, Greg Sassaman, Cycle World magazine, Jim DiSalvo(Jason DiSalvo's father), Bob Meiring, and many other's all enlisted the services or advice of FFR. In 1999, I was convinced to close up shop and go to work for the then top privateer pro DT team, TCR. After working with the team and later the HD dealership running the dyno room and doing most of the performance work for 5 years, I got a call from DeMay Racing to come work for the Factory Yamaha DT team that JR Schnabel rides for. After a year and a half, I really wanted to get back to working with the young up and coming amateurs. After a lot of thought, I chose 9 Year old Nick McFadden to be the rider I wanted to primarily work with. I believe Nick has the attitude and desire to be the best at anything he chooses. I am lucky that right now he wants to race motorcycles, and I want to be part of the process. So I packed up and moved to Owensboro, Kentucky where I have started FastForwardRacing back up. The FFR shop is now up and running offering everything from basic engine rebuilds to Race Ready DTXers. So give us a call and let us know how we can help. |
